| Using the Pert Analysis tool in MS Project 2000 can dramatically improve schedule accuracy. | |
| For years MS Project has misused the acronym PERT. With MS Project 2000 that has changed, and project managers now have a powerful new tool to assist in developing accurate timelines. PERT or Program Evaluation and Review Technique makes use of three duration estimates for items within the project plan, the worst case, most likely, and best case scenarios are combined to create a weighted average. The calculation used to combine the estimates places emphasis on the most likely case estimate, but it tends to increase the overall estimated time an activity or task will take to complete as compared to the standard expert opinion we most often use. To use the PERT tool in Project 2000 simple go to the View menu and then toolbars. From there select the PERT Analysis choice. To input the three numbers select the PERT form while on the task you wish to address. Once you have entered your timing Project will maintain the three estimates in separate columns so you can view the overall time estimate based on any of the three numbers. When you are ready to create the weighted average estimated time simply select the Calculate PERT button from your PERT menu (it looks like a calculator). Using this technique will dramatically improve the accuracy of your schedules! | |
